1. Largemouth Bass: Bass are active in shallow water early and late in the day, especially around main lake points and shallow back ends of coves. Target areas with less than two feet of water along the shoreline, using topwater baits like Zoom Horny Toads or Spro frogs near vegetation. Plastic grubs in 4-8 feet around points and spinnerbaits on any slightly windy points are also productive.
2. Striped Bass: Stripers are active near bridge structures such as I-85 and Route 1, as well as around creek mouths like Hubquarter Creek. Live shad and bucktail jigs cast along the bank are effective.
3. Crappie: Crappie are biting well near submerged structures and underwater cover. Look for schools in creek back ends like Lizard Creek and use small jigs or minnows.
4. Blue Catfish: Large blue cats up to 30 pounds are being caught using cut bait, particularly in deeper sections of the lake.
5. Bream (Sunfish): Bream are moving toward spawning beds in shallow areas; crickets and small live baits will produce bites.
With mild temperatures and light winds, conditions are favorable for early morning and late afternoon fishing, especially for bass and crappie in shallow water. Patchy fog may limit visibility briefly but will burn off as the day progresses. Anglers should focus on areas with vegetation and submerged structures for best results. Overall, the lake is shaping up for an excellent May fishing season—get out early and enjoy the varied bite opportunities!
